Can be very noisy due to other guests (doors slamming, people talking on telephone or in hallways, etc). Clean, single bed, washbasin in room, shared bath down hall.
Hostal Sofia, c/Avinguda de Roma, 1. Tel: 934 195 040. 200m from Sants train station. Paid 35€/night in Feb 2010 for single with washbasin in room, shared bath down hall. Quiet because mostly unoccupied.
Balmat, Gran Via 527-531 (Metro Urgell), 934 548 309. www.balmat.com. Two stores located near one another with decent selection of equipment and books. Outlet store around the corner on Comte d'Urgell.

Decathlon, south of Plaza Catalunya (Metro Catalunya). Walmart quality equipment at low prices.
El Corte Inglés, Av. Portal de l'Angel, 19 (Metro Catalunya). Note: this is the southernmost of the two Corte Inglés stores near Plaza Catalunya and specializes in sporting gear. Books section has some hiking guides.

Doubles are larger, mostly with 2 twin beds.
Various equipment stores on Calle Ribera de Curtidores (Latina metro). Also koala at Calle Leon 29 (Anton Martín metro).
